- Радиальное изменение распространения звездообразования поперек спирального рукава в близлежащей спиральной галактике NGC 5194 (M51a) исследовано посредством анализа пространственного распределения молодых звездных скоплений и соседних областей H II. Радиальный профиль в северном рукаве согласуется с предсказаниями теории стационарной волны плотности для отстающих спиралей, тогда как радиальный профиль в южном рукаве требует, чтобы скорость спирального узора была выше скорости вращения материи в диске внутри коротационного круга и ниже скорости вращения материи за его пределами.
